Stratfor Security Group Hacked by Anonymous

anon.jpg

The infamous hacking group Anonymous has hacked the Austin-based security firm Stratfor. Anonymous claims to have stolen credit card data and other sensitive information in its latest hacking attempt.

Stratfor is a research group that posts a daily newsletter on security issues and counts the Defense Department among others as clients. Stratfor, a self-proclaimed “intelligence company” admitted yesterday that a breach occurred on Christmas Eve and certain personal client information had been stolen.

Anonymous is a group of “hacktivists” that generally fight censorship, uncover injustice or just act as anarchists, but this recent attempt looks like thievery. Why is Anonymous belittling itself as a group by doing something so low-class as stealing credit card information? Does Anonymous have any internal control of its members? The Cyber Cold War

The Washington Post has a new article out about the cyber cold war that exists between China, the U.S. and Russia. From my personal experience of living in China for 3 and a 1/2 years, this is no joke. I still have friends in China whom are being actively monitored by the Chinese government – email messages don’t make it through the Chinese Great Firewall, email accounts have been hacked, blocked websites, undercover PSB agents following them around (and these are normal people mind you).

We in American don’t know how good we have it living in the free United States of America where privacy is a liberty for the most part. I hope the US military is tightening down on internal network security. I would hate for other countries to know all our secrets and ultimately loose our freedoms.

Wow! You can now use your iPhone as a key logger to log vibrations on a keyboard. Be careful, key loggers are illegal in most states. You can end up in jail if you use a key logger. A NY Detective Calls the Police Chief ‘Gomer Pyle’

Elmer FuddI worked with a lot of police officers in the past, a few were helpful, however, the majority were unhelpful in regards to the investigation I was conducting at the time. They often used the excuse, “we don’t have enough manpower to chase down this case,” or “in the grand scheme of things your case is not of great monetary value, so sorry we can’t help you.” They are often times over-worked, so I can sympathize. Also, this is often the reason why a private detectives even has work, so I guess I ought to thank them. When frustrated though, I often wanted to call a detective at the local PD Gomer Pyle or Elmer Fudd, but never did. This guy actually did, check it out: http://online.wsj.com/article/AP3f173d9bced04075949f1a9a8059d58f.html

Wikileaks to Release Over 250,000 US Diplomatic Cables

Wikileaks is at it again. At first, they agreed to release over 250,000 U.S. diplomatic cables to news agencies around the globe who would then systematically review and release the information as investigative stories to the public. Now, Wikileaks has agreed to release all of them to the public from their server without being redacted. Some of these previously confidential cables contain confidential information, including the names victims of sexual offenses and even the Pope’s personal phone number.

Google News Now Includes Archived Newspapers

Its not breaking news that Google News, in addition to other online private-investigator-only resources, is a great avenue for searching for news on a company or subject as part of an private investigation. However, recent upgrades to Google’s News service website (news.google.com) now makes it possible to search archived newspapers. Google News search results automatically include a few examples of archived news articles from newspapers at the end of the search results page, however, you can also go directly to the Google News archives search at news.google.com/archivesearch.

To give you an example, check out this newspaper story that appeared as the result of searching “private investigator.” It talks about a computer whiz who’s body was found by a private investigator after being hired by the kids’ family. Below the story is an advert for braised lamb shank for $2.75. Not sure which is more interesting, braised lamb shank for $2.75 or the story about the computer whiz.
Regardless, this will likely be a great tool for private detectives working a cold case. The news archive includes more than 2,000 different newspapers.
